History of the ASDV

The name African Society of Dermatology and Venereology (ASDV) was coined to improve the quality of skincare of Africans, particularly through research and training.

The 2015 World Congress of Dermatology held in Vancouver (Canada) provided an opportunity for the meeting of African dermatologists who understood the need for Africa to have an association of their own. This meeting in Vancouver was chaired by Dr Evans Kamuri from Kenya. At this meeting, 35 African dermatologists were able to attend at such short notice; Interim executives were elected and mandated to go ahead and register the association since the initial group had worked and developed a bi-lingual constitution for the society.

The Interim executives were charged to lead the society and arrange an inaugural scientific meeting in 2016 and the election of a substantive ASDV executive.

A biannual conference for ASDV was then instituted.

The first scientific meeting of the society was held in Abuja, Nigeria on 12th-18th July 2016 in conjunction with the 10th Annual Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists and executives elected.

The second conference was held in Durban, South Africa in conjunction with the South African Dermatology Society in 2018.

The next which was supposed to be held in Kenya in 2020 was postponed due to the pandemic.

The third scientific meeting was held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, in June 2022.

The fourth African Conference took place in Tunis, Tunisia, 22-27 April 2024, with more than 80 speakers form 5 continents and more than 600 participants.
